The Student Achievement Recognition Award (StAR) is given to outstanding music students who intend to teach professionally in an independent or collegiate music studio. Faculty and administrators select recipients on the basis of excellence in academic achievement, successful teaching experience and demonstrated leadership abilities.  StAR Award recipients receive a complimentary one-year MTNA membership, which includes educational and networking opportunities, professional growth and a subscription to American Music Teacher.

Recipients of the StAR Award are eligible to enter the MTNA Studio Fellowship Award Program.   Each year, the MTNA Studio Fellowship presents a monetary award to one student nationally who most clearly demonstrates a strong commitment to the music teaching profession. The program was established to help music teachers develop and enhance their newly established studios.    The 2008 MTNA Studio Fellowship Award was presented to Edward Moy, Butler University graduate.
