The purpose of the Music Teachers National Association composition competition is to encourage creativity and self-expression in student musicians through the art of composing and to recognize their achievements, as well as the significant work of their teachers.

Postmarked entry deadline:  September 14, 2010 (midnight) 

Entrants may submit only one composition. The composition may be in any style for any medium.  Do not submit the original manuscript. Mail four(4) copies of the score (no tapes) and one copy of the application to the state composition coordinator.  Click here for online entry form.

The manuscript must be labeled  with student’s name and category (Elementary, Junior, Senior, Young Artist) and the title of the composition. The teacher’s name MUST NOT be included on the score. 


Composition Categories:

Elementary:

Age: 5–10, as of 1/1/2011
Entry Fee: $50

Junior:

Age: 11–14, as of 1/1/2011
Entry Fee: $70



National Awards:

· Elementary Winner: $500

· Elementary Second Place: $250

· Teacher of Winner: $200

· Junior Winner: $1,000

· Junior Second Place: $500

· Teacher of Winner: $200

· Senior Winner: $2,000

· Senior Second Place: $1,000

· Young Artist Winner:  Guaranteed publication of winning composition, $3,000 and the opportunity for two private composition sessions with an internationally known composer selected and sponsored by Carl Fisher Music.

· Young Artist Second Place: $1,500 and a library of books and other materials related to composition published or distributed by Carl Fisher

· Teacher of Winner: $200
