MTNA Certification: A Statement of Professionalism, A Commitment to Excellence

The MTNA Professional Certification Program seeks to improve the level of professionalism within the field of applied music teaching. Certification verifies that the teacher has obtained a common body of knowledge and a competency level necessary to teach applied music. The initial program sets the standards and the renewals insure that the NCTM (Nationally Certified Teacher of Music) has maintained those standards.
 

• To begin the process of becoming certified, request the Certification Packet directly from MTNA. The packet contains all instructions and materials (forms and procedures to validate academic, performance and teaching competencies) needed for Step I, which verifies that the teacher has obtained a common body of knowledge.All applied music teachers are expected to meet the same standards, and all candidates must successfully complete Step II, a written practical examination in which the common body of knowledge will be applied to teaching situations.There is only one type of Certification--all NCTMs must meet the same criteria.Renewal of the MTNA Professional Certificate means the NCTM maintains the standard of the original certification and continues professional development and involvement. Fifteen documented points are required for renewal every five years in categories of teacher activities (continuing education and professional involvement) and student activities.
• Each NCTM is challenged to mentor at least one new certification candidate during the coming year. Mentoring a successful candidate will earn one renewal point. Maintain a file of activities with dates.
